I just received via UPS a very nice used RC Allen electric dirctional
gyro.
(RCA 15 AK-1). However, packing seemed insufficient to adequately
protect it
from "G" shock enroute. It seems to power up and run O.K. Does that
mean that
there is likely no damage? Or is it still possible that damage from
shipping
could show with further use?

Gyros like that are generally shipped by overhaul shops in a box about
9" across, with the gyro in the center of the usual foam rubber
filling. At that point it's well protected against most damage
(remember, even in the plane it still sees substantial G force. Bigger
potential problems come from sitting on a shelf for years.
